Wow - Manchester United just didn't have it tonight against Barcelona.

I had a dog in the fight, and that dog got whipped!! Bad time to come up with a flat performance, but it can happen in these one off games.

Yeah, that game was shit. Being a fan, I'm obviously very disappointed... But the season as a whole has been good!
Now for that 08/09 season review dvd... Oh well, bring on next season!! |

What was sad was how powerful and dangerous ManU looked until that one slip up by Vidic allowd Eto'o to score. It hurt that Fletcher was suspended and not
there to help out, as Carrick (who was bloody awful the whole game, IMO) was late in helping back.
From that point on, Barca was by far the better club. They could concentrate on possession and play their own game at that point. They did a great job of covering their weak back 4 (well, weak back 3 plus Puyol) and average - and injured - goalkeeper by controlling the ball in the midfield and not allowing scoring chances. Shoddy MU passing and cheap giveaways were just as much to blame for that, though. Still, can't complain about Manchester United's season. Community Shield, Carling Cup, Premiere League title and FIFA Club World Cup champions. Good amount of silverware for one year, particularly with all the injuries this season. Great season for the Reds, and with kids like Macheda, the De Silva twins, Welbeck, Gibson and Foster coming up, they will be a force for years. And we United fans can smile knowing how Chelsea fans must be gnashing their teeth, considering how many penalty kicks they should have been awarded in their semifinal against Barca. |

My wife and I were in Barcelona in 2004 (I think) when Liverpool came to town - and beat B FC.
Oh boy and sorry - I gotta say that there is a pretty "rowdy" bunch of fans, Now - think of a different word for "rowdy" - and you get the idea. It was quite a weekend. |

As a Liverpool fan, i thought it was a great game...Well since you didn't have any trophies this year it's only natural you'd need to celebrate someone else's success!! |

Squonk..the 4-1 win at Old Trafford i wouldn't swap for any trophy
And with Tevez coming to Liverpool ( watch this space )..bring on next season !! Oh and the Community Shield and World Club Cup are tin-pot trophies |

Wow, you wouldn't swap one win for a trophy? How odd, especially since that trophy pulled Man United level in domestic titles. Of course, the Red Devils
will go ahead and break the tie next season. Sorry your boys couldn't even compete for a tin-pot trophy this season. Enjoy bridesmaid status!

Mike (that was a good one by the way!), I never expected you to be a football - I mean "soccer" Actually, I never expect anyone from the US to like any sport other than American Football, basket or baseball. Good to see my preconceived notions shattered to pieces - honestly! |

Mike..oooooooh dem derrrs fighting words !...still 5-3 to us in European Cups though. And if Torres and Gerrard had been fit all season, you'd have won

Tevez is a great player, but the transfer price and strange nature of his contract/agent relationship make him a risky sign. I'd guess the only way ManU
keeps him is just to keep him out of Liverpool's hands. As much as I like him, gotta give the young guys some playing time eventually...

For the record - there are a number of us who really dig European football here on this forum. I've loved European FB for literally decades.

Question for you Overtherians...how come football has never really taken off in the States ( after numerous attempts )..too much competition from baseball,
basketball, gridiron ??
Oh and another little snippet for you Man Utd fans...the price of a Ronaldo t-shirt has been slashed from £13.99 to £9.99 on their website...he's on his way to Real Madrid !...muahahahaha |

Question for you Overtherians...how come football has never really taken off in the States ( after numerous attempts )..too much competition from baseball, basketball, gridiron ?? I don't think it's too much competition, it just takes time. In my mind it takes two things to become a fan... you have to play or have played to get a feel for the nuance of the game, and you have to watch top level play, ideally in person. The "play" part is a generational thing, in each generation more and more people play. It's the #1 participation sport amongst kids, and at least where I live (Southern California) it's the #1 organized adult sport as well. So that base is building. The second part is to watch top level games. Unfortunately most non-fans tune into soccer during the World Cup, which is also not the best place to see top level soccer (too much pressure causing too much conservative play IMO). ESPN is apparently planning on bidding for the new Premier League contract so those games may become available to a broader market. But when high quality soccer is available people turn out in numbers, either in person or on the tube. Visits from European club teams sell-out every stadium (60-80k) and Euro 2008 actually had higher ratings than baseball's "World Series" (actually only the US championship). So there's a bigger base than most people assume, it's just not going to happen for our own domestic league until the level of play gets higher. Our old league in the 70's brought in high quality players but went bankrupt as player contracts outpaced the TV contract revenue, etc. The new league is taking it slow, building up the US players instead of relying on high-priced imports (Becks excluded). In the long run it's the right approach, but in the short run it's frustrating because the level of play is not as high as the top leagues. People forget that it took decades for pro basketball and pro pointy-ball football to become succesful leagues. In both cases it was over 30 years until they really became "big league". Over time the combination of a more attractive domestic league, a better National side doing well in international tournaments, and wider availability of games from the better leagues will help accelerate the growth needle, but it's not going to happen overnight. |

For my part - I enjoy International soccer. I grew up watching "Soccer Made in Germany" on PBS on Sunday
mornings - and I don't know why - but sitting there in Minnesota watching these really cool and exciting matches between Munich and Frankfurt etc was just
awesome. I don't watch American league soccer - not that it isn't good - but watching Chicago play Boston isn'[t the same as watching France play
Spain or whatever. I really like Olympic Soccer and the World Cup and Premier League and the Champions League and all that. I loved when I lived in Norway
watching the Saturday afternoon English matches for the lottery or whatever it was called.
All 3 of my kids have been in soccer here in the states. They enjoyed it and there were a ton of kids involved. But "Football" is stuff for me. For the record - I love baseball and Hockey and all college sports like football and basketball. |

Huge football/soccer/whateveryouwannacallit fan here. I love watching Premiere League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, MLS and even the leagues in Mexico,
Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador and Colombia. Champions League is outstanding, pressure-packed football. And World Cup and European Cup are GREAT fun! I even watch
the CONCACAF Champions League. I just love the game. Now that might be because my grandfather (who was born near Newcastle, UK) took me to see the New York
Cosmos (with Pele at the time) when I was a kid.
As for why it hasn't caught on over here (yet), well, there are many reasons and I think the previous posters have touched on some of them. I personally believe the game has never been properly packaged here from a coverage standpoint. This is starting to change, with ESPN covering Champions League matches the last couple of years (but still only the really big clubs) and the U.S. World Cup qualifiers, as well as some MLS games. I think a lot of American kids don't identify with the game as they get older because the U.S. has not been very successful on the world stage (except on the women's side). But getting back to the TV thing, the sport just doesn't get enough exposure. I had to buy an extra package to get Fox Soccer Channel and I would have to pay an additional $12 per month JUST to get Setanta (by itself!). So I don't have Setanta, but my package included FSC and GolTV. My wife said I watch way too much soccer one day when I wondered aloud whether Bayern Munich would take off Podolski and bring on Klose. Hockey languished as a dead sport until the 1980 U.S. team won the gold medal. The next 20 years saw a HUGE increase in the sport's popularity, even if that has dropped off quite a bit due to a horrible commissioner running the league into the ground, but I digress. I think a similar U.S. success in soccer would really be a huge boon to the sport here. As squonkster said, youth soccer has really taken off in the last decade, so those kids are bound to grow up fans of the sport and should help things. The MLS needs to grow in quality and become a "legitimate" pro league also, in order for the U.S. to take notice of the game. Beckham's arrival helped (I think...at least it did from an exposure standpoint), but if a guy like Messi or Kaka played here, it would help. The MLS also needs to join the world's schedule as far as soccer season is concerned. I also think a relegation system here would be fantastic, although it is unlikely to happen due to the corporations getting their hands on it. I think all the North American pro sports would benefit from a tiered system with relegation. Hey Uhuru...I don't mind so much if we lose Ronaldo. Despite his incredible talent, he's often petulant and selfish. Besides, you know Sir Alex will make the right deal and grab an Iniesta or Ribery to replace him. |

Hey, great posts you 3...you obviously know your stuff...not bad for Yanks !
Not so sure about getting Tevez now though..moneybags Manchester City are starting to throw their money around which will price Liverpool out of the market OMG...and mike, you saw Pele playing for the New York Cosmos ?!?!?...now i'm jealous. Was that the time George Best was playing too ? I still think George Best was the greatest player ever..any opinions ?? |

I don't remember a whole lot about the Cosmos game, except that New York beat San Diego 5-0 that day. I don't recall George Best, nor was I ever able
to catch him in his playing days. My grandfather told me a lot about the game, but at that age (I think I was like 8 years old), most of it went in one ear and
out the other. I was just enjoying the spectacle more than anything. I was more into baseball and (American) football at the time. I do remember watching part
of Pele's last game on TV.
Because of a lack of coverage, I didn't really become very informed about the game until around the time Beckham was wowing everyone with his set pieces at Manchester United. I became a fan of that team - Beckham, Keane, Van Nistleroy, etc., and it just grew and grew from there, especially when my daughter started playing premiere travel soccer (she's a goalkeeper on a state cup team here in Florida) a few years ago.

Ahhh, Best with the LA Aztecs! Those were the days, I used to go to those games. There
used to be one or two moments a game where you'd rub your eyes and think "did I just see that!" I'm sure he wasn't even close to the
player he was a few years before, but he still could show it in flashes. He spent two or three years with the Aztecs and then Cruyff came for a year. Cruyff
still had it, that was something. The team wasn't that great but he just dominated the games.
